Have you ever read The Atrocity Archive by Charles Stross? It's Len Deighton spy bureaucracy meets HP Lovecraft. Funny as hell, IMO.

BTW: I just spent 4 days in your native land, albeit in Eastern Ontario. It was beautiful.

The scary part is that if that huge algae bloom was a shuggoth, it would probably be better news than the reality.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_zone_(ecology)

"Aquatic and marine dead zones can be caused by an increase in chemical nutrients in the water, known as eutrophication. Eutrophication leads to harmful algal blooms (HABs). When algal blooms die off, oxygen is used to decompose the algae which creates hypoxic conditions. Chemical fertilizer is considered the prime cause of dead zones around the world. Runoff from sewage, urban land use, and fertilizers can also contribute to eutrophication."

Long story short, you get a huge biological mass, and then when it decomposes, it sucks all the oxygen away, suffocating all marine life around. And for it to appear that far north would seem to imply that the globe is warming or something. But of course, we know that global warming is a myth. Thank goodness, it's only a shuggoth.
